It’s all about Love this season at HUSH. The world could do with a lot more love right now and that starts with loving ourselves first.
“When a woman becomes her own best friend life is easier.”
― Diane Von Furstenberg
For many of us, the concept of loving ourselves or even being our own best friend doesn’t come easily. We often say ‘I love you’ to others and nurture our external relationships, but how many of us truly say it to ourselves and nourish our internal wellbeing? To practice self-love, we need to put the same effort, dedication and commitment into it as we would with any other relationship. Enter… me time! Set aside however much time you can within your busy jam-packed diary, commit to it and start navigating the path towards self-love.
Lose the guilt
Time for yourself is not selfish. If feelings of guilt enter your ‘me-time’ let the thought pass and try not to engage with it. Self-love is about pursuing what you WANT to do, not what you think you SHOULD do. This can be hard to accept, and achieve, but by making time to reset and restore, we re-enter the world with more energy, compassion, kindness and love for ourselves and others. We can’t give our best self out if we haven’t taken care of ourselves first.
Nurture your uniqueness
Celebrated Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist CJ Jung said “The most terrifying thing is to accept oneself completely.” Try not to be afraid of who you are and instead celebrate your wonderful differences, talents and passions. Think back to the times you felt most content within your own skin. Where were you? What were you doing? What were you wearing? What noises surrounded you? What objects are part of the memory? Recalling these feelings will help you stay true to your intention of self-love. Jot your thoughts down in a journal to keep you focused.
A huge amount of our enjoyment in life comes from planning and anticipation. If you’re excited for your me-time it is much more likely to happen! Without planning it’s all too easy for the stresses of daily life to get in the way. Get your food shopping done a day early, set aside those bits and pieces which will recreate those all-important feelings of joy – a candle, essential oils, cosy loungewear, a warm throw, your art kit, or book in that yummy yoga class, massage or sky-dive! Whatever it may be, get your very own self-care kit ready so that you won’t have any unnecessary disturbances. Consider a digital detox to prevent mindless browsing through social media which can evoke negative emotions and comparisons. After all, this time is about restoring and nurturing your mind, body and soul… not #mindbodyscroll !
Savour the moment
When the time arrives, be mindful, present and nourish yourself by savouring every little or big moment – you deserve it! We’ve all heard the time-old wonderful nurturing tips of drawing yourself a lovely bath, massaging on the luxurious products and oils, and cooking yourself that delicious meal worthy of your best guest. Whether it’s enjoying every sip, every mouthful, every step, feeling water on your skin or smelling new scents, notice your senses, your surroundings and be present in your body. Spoil yourself, show up for you and only you! Let yourself be YOU and connect to the joy of living within your own body.
Create new memories
Have you heard the phrase ‘life begins at the edge of your comfort zone’? Well, love can as well – you may meet a partner in a new space, but you may also meet yourself there, a version of yourself you didn’t know existed and one that you can really fall in love with. Now’s the chance to let that person shine and to appreciate yourself for trying something new, being brave enough to meet new people and visit a different place. Be inspired and amazed by yourself – develop a true sense of self-worth and a deep respect for yourself! You’ll have memories of how able you are, how inspiring you are and an awareness that you are capable of manifesting your intentions. With enough dedication and practice of self-love you’ll be making your own memories of the best times spent with yourself.
Big love to you all and please …love yourself first to love others bigger.
